How are people most commonly turned into vampires in fiction?
I'm writing a short story about vampires, but I still can't decide how I should explain the process whereby a person is changed into a vampire. I know that generally, people get bitten by a vampire, and become one, but how does that work? Is it something to do with venom?
Or, any suggestions? Preferably something very not-Twilighty. That series really ruined vampire novels for me.

I would think that they get bitten and it is passed on like a virus or a blood disease.
Like HIV or Rabies or something.. lol.... I guess
