There are hundreds of spirits in Vodou, known as Lwa. Many Lwa were originally African deities brought over to Haiti by slaves. On Haiti their spiritual world merged with Catholicism and the religion of indigenous islanders. Later they were joined by new Lwa, including spirits of freedom fighters.
